However, if you do not kill Baal (or Diablo, if you don't have the expansion) on that difficulty you will be unable to make the red portal, but you will never get credit for the quest to kill the Cow King (because you need to have killed Baal/Diablo to be able to start the quest). Watch your Mercenary and Summons as they can "accidentally" kill him, too. If you don't want to complete the Cow King quest or are unsure, the safest place to be is in town (use Town Portal scroll!). Once you’re on a friends list and create a small group of friends it’s much easier to gear up and often they will agree to split drops ahead of time if really nice pieces are found together. If anyone kills Cow King for FIRST time (except, a person who has NOT killed Baal/Diablo, see below), then everyone INSIDE the Cow Level will get credit for the (hidden) Cow King quest and will NOT make the red portal anymore. It wouldn’t be in my stash if it wasn’t useful though. At this point I’m just cycling the worst gear out of my stash and handing it freely to new people I see in questing games. They will gladly throw you excess items since most of us have no bag space after hoarding too much. Back off and let them do their thing while you get straight to the end game thanks to their help. It’s a waste of time if the rusher has nothing to look forward to while rushing newer players. Players whine about nobody willing to rush when 9 times out of 10 if you do rush someone they will try to take everything on bosses. It’s the same scenario with rushing though.

Just dont sit right on top of us because that will drive them to teleport away in order to secure their high rune drops. Myself and many others are more than happy to give away things from our fast an efficient kill speeds as well as let newer players leech exp. I’ve had sorcs that just sit there near me and teleport around following me waiting for drops. If you maintain a distance and ask for leftovers people will most likely accommodate your situation. They usually chase away high KPM players though by trying to steal their drops. That’s fine everyone goes through their initial gearing phase.
